The Medley

is a twice-a-year literary journal run by the students of Hansraj College, University of Delhi. It is a repository of stories, poems and essays sent to us from around the world since 2018.

Editor's Note

The primaeval folds of this issue's theme, Laal's ideation began with wonder: the simple, terrifying realisation that one single hue can harbour infinities. It was an abstraction at first, to say the least, and we were afraid we'd tapped into something we couldn't rein in, a spectrum that refuses tidy categories. So we did what editors do when dazzled and alarmed: we sat down and studied it.

Laal surfaced everywhere we looked. In the wilted petals of a lost love. In the passionate vows of a bride's sindoor. In the scabs of a bleeding soul. From repressed sexuality and a woman’s colour of resistance to patriarchy, to unrecorded histories of bodies that carry bloodlines of violence, we tried...tried hopelessly...lovingly...to map that stretch of meaning.

Laal was what the first human bled, and across millennia, the causes for bleeding have repeated themselves in familiar mutations. Each of us carries our own repertoire of Laal in the love that we lost or a longing for the present. Imagine a girl crossing the threshold to enter womanhood. A wife fighting to swallow tears to internalise the patriarchy in herself. Or a soldier scratching open his wounds to forgive the blood on his hands.

This eleventh issue of The Medley features an interview with Sahitya Akademi recipient Arupa Patangia Kalita. Her work carries the echoes of Laal within it; she writes about resistance and questions on Women in society. In this issue, we asked writers and artists to let the colour run: through silent poems of unheard grief, through essays that excavate, through stories with no redemption. We are truly grateful to everyone who trusted us with their pigments....those tender, savage, shameful and sacred shades of humanity. You held your stains up; we learned to read them as testimony.

Read these pages slowly. Let the shades accumulate. If Laal unsettles you, that is its duty. If it comforts you, that is its gift.

With that, we present to you Issue #11 of The Medley, Laal.

Warmly, The Editorial Team The Medley with imperfect, stained lives.
